Sum Peaks are produced when the pulse processor cannot distinguish between two x-ray that arrive at almost the exact same time, adding or summing their values, ie Fe in excess in a sample can produce sum peaks: Fe Kα + FeKα = 6.4 +6.4 = sum peak at 12.8
